Derek Sanford is the Lead Pastor of Grace Church in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife Kim and their three children. Derek became Lead Pastor after serving for many years in various ministry roles under Pastor Al Detter. After transitioning to Lead Pastor, Derek began to implement a plan to raise and release volunteers throughout the ministry of Grace Church.
Dale and Derek discuss the process involved in empowering volunteers to lead most areas of the church. This fascinating conversation concerns how to equip your church to thrive by utilizing the gifts within your local church body.

1) Derek decided there had to be a better way of “doing church” than having a paid staff who oversaw every ministry aspect while the church folks sat in the pews. He realized he had everything he needed to be seated right in front of him each Sunday.
2) Volunteers lead the majority of the ministries at Grace Church. Many of the paid staff serve under the oversight of volunteers.
3) One of the most challenging jobs Derek faces is when he needs to “fire” a volunteer. However, consistent communication and training, along with annual job reviews, help to make the process go as well as possible.
4) There is tremendous freedom to pursue what you are best at when you give away all of the other ministry aspects that aren’t necessarily in your wheelhouse.
